Maine “Corporate Records Service” Scam

In last month’s newsletter, we warned readers of some scammers who are posing as state agencies.  The scammers’ correspondence looks very official and encourages companies to pay what they believe to be their annual corporate filing fees.  Instead, they are paying (voluntarily) a completely unnecessary fee to a non-government swindler.  Our earlier article (which contains samples of some phony correspondence) may be found here.

We felt it worth reminding you of such schemes, even just a few weeks later, because they now are hitting closer to home.  Maine’s Secretary of State issued a Consumer Alert yesterday in response to one of these scams spreading across Maine.  That alert can be found here, and we encourage you to read it, and to remain wary of increasingly legitimate-looking letters.
