Angus H. Mountain

We will miss his humor, energy, skill, friendship,
and his ability to fill a room.

My first vivid memory of Angus is from June of 1995 at the first Baker Newman Noyes summer outing. It was pouring rain. We suffered through a golf scramble but needed to find an indoor activity after lunch. Sebasco had some indoor bowling lanes. Angus, as you all know, was quite athletic - except when it came to bowling. Picture him trying to get down low to release the bowling ball. He showed us that he could bowl with either hand but the balls always started off in the gutter - and stayed in the gutter. All you could hear was that great, deep, delightful laugh. This was a man who loved to laugh and was generous with his laughter.

Angus was the ultimate social director. He chaired our summer outing committee year in and year out even though he kept insisting that he wouldn't continue assuming that responsibility. Several years ago Angus and his committee came up with the bright idea of a dunk tank. Many of us participated in that humiliating experience since the funds were earmarked for some worthy cause - but guess who didn't show up that day!?

We will always remember Angus in a tuxedo at the Christmas Party.

Angus always planned a social aspect for every business outing that he participated in even if the rest of the group had other plans. A beer was always in order after a proposal effort, or the end of an audit or whatever. No one argued with Angus and everyone was always glad they stayed.

It was told to me that in the very early years of Angus' career he was quite the CAD. He had to be spoken to on more than one occasion about reporting to work late after a night of intensive partying. Anytime anyone went to a national Arthur Young function and folks learned that you hailed from Portland, Maine the inevitable question was — "Hey, how's that Mountain guy doing?" Angus always made an impression.

He lived life big.

Angus had a marvelous career. He loved his job. His clients not only liked him they had tremendous respect for him. He worked hard for his clients and for our firm.

Don't get me wrong - Angus could be a real pain in the butt sometimes. The staff at first found him to be intimidating and gruff but when they got to know him a more apt description would be "a rough, tough cream puff". It took time to earn his confidence and respect but when you did, he was 150% behind you. He could be highly critical but never mean. His heart was always in the right place. He was proud to be a partner and he behaved like one.

Angus was a tax partner wannabe. He was constantly giving tax advice and then running two doors down to ask a tax partner if he gave the correct advice. We were sure that he belonged to the largest fraternity in the world because there was always another fraternity brother who needed tax advice - most often via the telephone from J's Oyster Bar.

The last big project that Angus worked on for the Firm was our move to new space. He was the catalyst for looking at new space and I am sorry that he won't be here to see us move. We might even find room in the budget for the wet bar he wanted in the large conference room.

Baker Newman Noyes will never be the same.

We will miss the many faces of Angus — beard one day, gone the next, back again the next.

We will miss seeing him in his beloved BMW convertible playing the tunes.

We will miss seeing him sink 75 ft putts from the fairway.

We will miss his defiance in keeping a refrigerator in his office.

We will miss his passion for our business.

We will miss hearing of his passion for Nicky.

We will miss Angus.

We are all grateful for having known him.

Baker Newman Noyes will never be the same again.
